A Star Spangled Celebration

We attended a fireworks display and symphony concert at Greenfield Village, in Dearborn and it was a wonderful way to celebrate the 4th of July, as well as spend an evening relaxing with friends. It is not your typical fireworks display, in an open field, but rather a beautiful historic setting, with restored buildings and vintage gardens as a backdrop.

We spread out our blankets, set up a picnic with a variety of delicious finger food, poured a glass of wine and chatted the evening away.

As we waited for the concert to start, a fife and drum band marched by in period costumes - very patriotic.

To continue the patriotism of the evening, everyone stood to sing God Bless America and cheered for the veterans in the audience, as the symphony played the anthems from the various service branches.

As dusk fell, the symphony played the 1812 Overture, complete with real cannons booming in the background. The fireworks were beautiful, but hearing the live patriotic music as they exploded into the night sky was a wonderful way to enjoy the end to a perfect celebration of our country.

Happy Monday!

  5. Looks like a wonderful celebration. And of course I love the 1812 Overture being played. Also reminds me of an old Poirot mystery movie, 'The Disappearance of Mr. Davenheim.' :-)

  8. Sounds like a great place to celebrate the 4th! My son lives near GV and has gone there for Thanksgiving--they cook as they did 200 years ago. Such a unique place to celebrate our holidays.

  10. In this Canadian's mind, that is exactly how I imagine you all celebrating the 4th of July - fife and drum, 1812 overture and a blanket picnic.
